Bluing isn't paint.
ㅤ
It's a controlled oxidation process and the techniques behind that finish have changed significantly over time.
ㅤ
Slow rust bluing. Charcoal bluing. Hot caustic bluing.
ㅤ
Different methods. Same goal: protecting steel while achieving the right finish.
ㅤ
Here's how the process evolved.

Some skills are worth preserving. Precision filing. Metal preparation. Polishing. Finishing. Traditional restoration techniques.

The craft lives in the details and in the hands of the people who take the time to learn them.

The first recipient of a grant created to help preserve the craft. Pennsylvania Gunsmith School is honored to be the inaugural recipient of the Doug Turnbull Firearms Restoration Arts Grant.

It’s recognition of something we believe is worth protecting: the technical skill and traditional craftsmanship behind firearms restoration. The work continues at the bench and with the next generation of craftsmen.

There’s a difference between working on something and understanding why it works.
ㅤ
Tinkering teaches you by doing. Technical training takes that a step further, understanding the mechanics, precision, and problem-solving behind the work.
ㅤ
At PGS, it’s not just about getting your hands on the work. It’s about understanding what’s happening underneath them.

One day I'll learn to machine.
One day I'll build something myself.
One day I'll really learn the trade.
